Truth or Dare by Non Pratt

Truth or Dare

Title: Truth or Dare
Author: Non Pratt
Series: N/A
Publication: 1st June 2017 by Walker Books
Genre: YA, Contemporary.

My Thoughts (2)

A powerful and moving novel about bravery from the Guardian’s “writer to watch” Non Pratt, perfect for fans of Rainbow Rowell, John Green and Holly Bourne. How far is too far when it comes to the people you love? Claire Casey hates being the centre of attention. But if it means getting Sef Malik to notice her, it’s a risk she’s happy to take. Sef is prepared to do anything to help his recently disabled brother. But this means putting Claire’s love – and life – on the line. Because when you’re willing to risk everything, what is there left to lose?

My Thoughts

You know those books where you put them down and you find yourself thinking about them? This is one of those books. I was halfway through and almost got hit in the face by a tennis ball because I was thinking about this book.

The book is one story with two sides. Literally. I loved the way that you read Claire’s side first then had to flip the book over to read Sef’s side. Seeing the story from the two different perspectives really helped to understand where the characters were coming from and the choices they made.

Non Pratt just has this way with words. This book may be aimed at teenagers but it it’s definitely for all ages. Non managed to explore a huge range of different subjects – including social media, racisim and disability – without them becoming the main focus and still somehow making it relatable.

Claire and Sef’s relationship was just beautifully written. I’ve read so many books recently where the relationships have been out of the blue or really quick but this wasn’t anything like them. The entire relationship just felt so natural and realistic. I found myself smiling at so many points, and doing my foot wiggle that I do when I’m loving a book.

I really must insist that you all go and read this book.

Truth or Dare by Non Pratt

We got a clue for this book, and I actually guessed we’d be getting something different. I can’t explain how excited I was to see this in the box! I loved Trouble (my review) and this book sounds just as great! It’s really interesting because it’s told from two sides and half way through the book you flip it upside down and start from the otherside.

To top things off, the book is also signed! and it comes with a lovely letter too.

This is by far my favourite item in the box. I’m awful when it comes to book marks as I don’t have many and just use anything I can grab as one. This is absolutely stunning, I can’t wait to start using it. I’m going to go onto Pintrest and start learning how to make them like this.

Extras: Windfall, The Gender games, Taste of Blue Light and and ARC of The Walking Land by Callie Bates with signed bookplate and author letter.

A second book! A second book! A second book! This is why this box is so awesome!

Lady Elanna Valtai is fiercely devoted to the King who raised her like a daughter. But when he dies under mysterious circumstances, Elanna is accused of his murder and must flee for her life.

Returning to the homeland of magical legends she has forsaken, Elanna is forced to reckon with her despised, estranged father, branded a traitor long ago. Feeling a strange, deep connection to the natural world, she also must face the truth about the forces she has always denied or disdained as superstition powers that suddenly stir within her.

But an all-too-human threat is drawing near, determined to exact vengeance. Now Elanna has no choice but to lead a rebellion against the kingdom to which she once gave her allegiance. Trapped between divided loyalties, she must summon the courage to confront a destiny that could tear her apart.

Sounds interesting, probably not going to be on the top of my TBR pile, but will be read.

Extras: Following Orphelia Bookmark, Flame in the Mist sample by Renee Ahdieh, Gilded Cage postcard and and ARC of Red Sister by Mark Lawrence

I was so excited to see Red Sister! Two books!  It’s very chunky but sounds amazing – it reminds me a bit of Grave Mercy by Robin Lafevers.

“I was born for killing – the gods made me to ruin”

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices’ skills to deadly effect: it takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist.

But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder: guilty of worse.

How brilliant does that sound! There’s also a sample from Flame in the Mist which I haven’t heard of before. I love getting these sample. There’s also an Orphelia book mark and a Guilded Cage post mark which I haven’t read but may do now.

The Diabolic by S.K.Kincaid

I must admit that I have never seen this book before but that’s part of the reason I order Illumicrate, to get new books! From the blurb, it seems really interesting.

A Diabolic is ruthless. A Diabolic is powerful. A Diabolic has a single task: Kill in order to protect the person you ve been created for.
Nemesis is a Diabolic, a humanoid teenager created to protect a galactic senator s daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up side by side, but are in no way sisters. Nemesis is expected to give her life for Sidonia, and she would do so gladly. She would also take as many lives as necessary to keep Sidonia safe.
When the power-mad Emperor learns Sidonia s father is participating in a rebellion, he summons Sidonia to the Galactic court. She is to serve as a hostage. Now, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia. She must become her. Nemesis travels to the court disguised as Sidonia a killing machine masquerading in a world of corrupt politicians and two-faced senators children. It s a nest of vipers with threats on every side, but Nemesis must keep her true abilities a secret or risk everything.
As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns there is something more to her than just deadly force. She finds a humanity truer than what she encounters from most humans. Amidst all the danger, action, and intrigue, her humanity just might be the thing that saves her life and the empire.

Illumicrate Unboxing #4

Screen Shot 2016-08-09 at 20.01.30

Illumicrate is a bookish subscription box based in the UK. It contains at least one book and lots of other bookish delights. It is a quarterly box that arrives in February, May, August and November.

After seeing a few other people unbox their amazing Illumicrates I had to get my hands on one for myself. This is my first box and box #4 of Illumicrate boxes. I arrive home visiting a friend for a few days to find that my Illumicrate had arrived and boy is it a good one!

August Box

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff.

I was really excited to find this in the box as I had been eying it up on goodreads for a while. It came with a signed bookplate to stick in the book, an art card of the front cover and a lovely bookmark which I’m already using.

Destined to destroy empires, Mia Corvere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.

Six years later, the child raised in shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day she lost everything.

But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and daemons at the heart of a murder cult.

The Red Church is no ordinary school, but Mia is no ordinary student.
The shadows love her.
And they drink her fear.

The Graces by Laure Eve with letter

I was so shocked to find not one but TWO books in this box! I had never heard of this book before getting this box. It comes with a lovely letter from the author which is a lovely touch, it also explains that we’re receiving this book a month before it’s official release date which is amazing. It also came with a signed sticker to place inside the book.

Everyone said the Graces were witches.

They moved through the corridors like sleek fish, ripples in their wake. Stares followed their backs and their hair.

They had friends, but they were just distractions. They were waiting for someone different.

All I had to do was show them that person was me.

The Trio Coasters by Taratjah Art – Exclusive

I was nervous when they said there would be an item related to The Cursed Child, partially because I own so much merch that I would be a little sad if I received something I already owned. I was so pleased to see these in here. I love that it has both the original films and the current plays. Can’t wait to use them.

Drink Me Strawberry Tea from Post Tea – Exclusive

I love tea. I love Alice in Wonderland. I was very happy! I set the kettle boiling immediately. This strawberry fruit tea was very yummy indeed.

In Omnia Paratus Tote Bag by Colorful Geekiness – Exclusive

I’ve never actually seen Gilmore Girls so I have absolutely no idea about this one! With a quick google, the quote means ‘ready for anything’ whihc is nice! As I refuse to pay 5p for a plastic bag this one will certainly be used.

Colouring Quotes by Ashley Poston – Exclusive

These are some lovely quotes from Six of Crows and Grisha (which I haven’t actually read yet) There’s also a discount code for her latest book We Own the Night.

Extras: A Torch Against the Night sample, Red Rising small prints, bookmark discount code and Unboxed  discount code.
I’ve never heard of A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir so I really like that there’s a lovely sample chapter.
I started Red Rising but marked it as DNF (review) but these prints are very pretty!
I have already had a look at the bookmarks on the website and they are very cool. Unfortunately it’s set in the States, so I’m going to wait until I have a bit more money and there is more than one bookmark I like so I don’t have to pay as much for postage. Check out the website at: http://www.mybookmark-shop.com
Unboxed is the latest novella from Non Pratt with a discount code. It says it will be about a diverse case of characters that return to their old school and discover that no one can ever truly go back. I read Trouble and loved it (review) so  will be checking this one out!
