May 2017 Monthly Wrap Up

Monthly Wrap Up (1)

These months are just zooming by. Actually, these years! Congratulations to everyone who finished exams and graduated this month, and good luck to everyone who is sitting them next month. It’s weird to think that this time two years ago I was finishing my degree! Time either needs to slow down or I need to find some more productive things to be doing with my time.

Top Ten Books On My Summer TBR

35fed-toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. This week’s topic is “Top Ten Summer Reads Freebie” so I’ve gone for my summer TBR pile.

My Summer TBR Pile

Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Dexter, #1)A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1)The Best of Adam SharpDark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2)Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Dexter #1) – After completing the series I can’t wait to get started on this!

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic # 1) – I’ve heard lots of good things.

The Best of Adam Sharp – I loved The Rosie Project so was thrilled when I got this ARC.

Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin #2) – I’ve been meaning to read this for a while.

Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me – I’m just waiting for it to go down in price. I’ve loved everything I’ve seen her in (which, granted, is not much)

Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor, #1)Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1)Caraval (Caraval, #1)Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)

Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1) – I got this in my illumicrate and it looks great, I just don’t want to lug it into work as it’s huge.

Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns #1) – Everything about this calls to me, I’m not really sure why I haven’t started it earlier.

Caraval (Caraval #1) – I started it and didn’t love it. I’m going to give it a second chance because of the raving reviews.

Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle #1) – Another hardback illumicrate book that I really want to read but don’t want to lug to work in my bag.

Six of Crows (Six of Crows #1) – Another one with rave reviews that I can’t wait to start.

Top Ten Things On Our Reading Wishlists.

35fed-toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. This week’s topic is “Top Ten Things On Our Reading Wishlist.”

This was a team effort this week! We would like….

Intricate magical systems that makes sense – Think: Trudi Canavan.

Strong, but realistic, female characters. – Think: Tris in The Witcher Series or Eowyn in The Lord of the Rings series.

Less love triangles with predictable endings – Think: Less like Mortal Instruments or Twilight.

Books with multiple points of view – Think: Falling Kingdom’s series by Morgan Rhodes or You’re the One that I Want by Giovanna Fletcher.

Legitimately threatening villains. Ones that will actually do stuff rather than explain and do things slowly. Think: The Falconer in Lies of Loche Lamora by Scott Lynch.

Better second books. They usually end up slipping as they are building up to the final book. Think: Less like The Painted Man by Peter V Brett more like Michael J Sullivan.

More Pat Rothfusslike, now please.

What’s on your reading wish list?

Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book

35fed-toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. This week’s topic is  “Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book.”

Daz and Emily’s Choices

Too Much World Building – I don’t like it when there is pages and pages minute and insignificant details. It makes reading a chore. Think: J.R.R. Tolkein, Joseph Conrad and George. R. R. Martin.

Pointless Love Stories/Triangles – A pointless love story just ruins everything that’s happened in the book. That’s great that you’re pining over the hot, attractive guy but can we get back to your assassinating the people who destroyed your village and brutally murdered your family? Thanks. Think: When We CollidedHunger Games.

Too Many Main Characters or Flicking POV and Not Stating Who’s POV It Is  Whoa there Nelly, we’re well and truly lost. There’s only so much my brain can hold without having a map in front of me. Think: Game of Thrones,

Fan Pleasers By pleasing your fans you are destroying your book and making it completely unoriginal and frankly a disappointment. Cassandra Clare. Need I say more?

Ending Rushers – people who spend so much time building up a story and then finish it in one chapter. Think: Clariel by Garth Nix.

Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book

35fed-toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. This week’s topic is  “Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book.”

Emily’s Choices

Female Assassins – Think Celaena in Throne of Glass or Ismae in Grave Mercy. The next one I am dying to read is Red Sister which is about girls raised to be assassins.

Snarky characters – got to love a bit of sass and snark. Think Baz from Carry On, Tyrion from Game of Thrones or even Libby from Holding up the Universe (I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot but I sure did love her!)

Carry OnImage result for game of thrones bookHolding Up the Universe

Multiple view points – gahhh, I just love it when a book is from different character’s points of view. Sure it can get confusing with masses like GoT but if it’s done right it is incredible. Think Lies of Loche Lamora, Falling Kingdoms or, my most recent find, You’re the One that I Want. If you throw in a bit of flicking in time you have me trembling at my knees.

Daz’s choices

More than one main character – I love it when you follow the stories of two people and then they slowly merge into one through hatred (eg. Clariel by Garth Nix) or through cooperation (eg. Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski).

Magic I like there being a hint of magic. Not too much, just a hint. Like in the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix or The Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch.

Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy But Still Haven’t Read

35fed-toptentuesday

Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices, #1)Age of Myth (The Legends of the First Empire, #1)Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare – I bought this within the first week of it’s release date. That was a year ago this week.

Age of Myth by Michael J Sullivan – he is on my instant buy lists. I also have Hollow World by him which I still haven’t read. I know they’ll both be awesome when I am finally in the mood for some epic fantasy.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas – I pre-ordered this. She has released 3 books since and I still haven’t picked it up.

Angel of Storms by Trudi Canavan – Gahh. I remember how good the first book was. My problem with this is that it’s a thick hardback book which I don’t like having to carry around.

Angel of Storms (Millennium’s Rule, #2)Gone GirlThe Miniaturist

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – I got half sucked into the hype. only half as I bought the book and film but haven’t seen/read either.

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton – I bought this a it was being read by a lot of book clubs and it was at eye level in every bookshop you walked into. I’ve read maybe 10 pages? Then decided to read something else.

Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs – I love Bones so much. I just HAD to buy this. I actually own about 5 books from the series. Haven’t read any of them.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas – Another pre-order that I’ve not picked up. I actually own book 2 of the series too…

Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All by Jonas Jonasson – I’ve read two other books by this authors. They were made but so fun. When I saw this I just had to get it. I intend to read it this year for my Around the Year in 52 books challenge.

Déjà Dead (Temperance Brennan, #1)A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All
