No thank you…

Image result for john greenAnything written John Green – These always get really hyped up. I read them. Groan at the pretentious metaphors, put in there so teenagers will quote them. Then finish the book feeling majorly disappointed.

Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan- I read the first one and it was OK. I enjoyed the films but didn’t think they were overly great. I’m definitely older than the target audience now!

Fever (The Chemical Garden #1) by Lauren DeStafano and Crossed (Matched 2) by Ally Condie – I’ve grouped these together because I read the first books in both series around the same time and have no idea which is which. They’re both dystopian books and I’m not really into that thing anymore.

The Thorn of Emberlain (Gentleman Bastard, #4)The Thorn of Emberlain (Genteman Bastard #4) by Scott Lynch – This is really hard for me to admit. I loved the first book, it’s it up there in my top 5 and instant recommends to anyone and everyone. But since the first book I’ve found that they’ve been going down hill a bit. The wait doesn’t help as I go in with really, really high expectations and come out feeling disappointed that the wait wasn’t worth it. This book has been given official release dates numerous times and then withdraw at the last minute. After almost 5 years I’ve lost patience and hope.

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith – I pretty much only wanted to read it because of J.K.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North – I really loved the sound of this book but it’s been sitting on my shelf for years and every time I go to pick it up I end up reading something else instead. Clearly a sign.

Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1)Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard – I watched most of the TV series and enjoyed it for the most part. I read the first book in this series and found it disappointing as it was essentially just the first episode of the first series so I can be bothered to read the next 15!

The Miniaturist  by Jessie Burton – I picked this up because loads of book clubs were reading it. I didn’t actually look at what it was about. I read the first chapter and decided it probably wasn’t for me. Maybe I’ll pick it up in the future. Possibly…

  2. We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver – Another that I still intend to read.
  3. Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence – I read Red Sister last year, which was brilliant, so that’s made me want to read this more.
  4. The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie – This one I’m not so sure about anymore.
  5. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness – I intend on reading this this year in the hope to tick off one of my challenges.

6. When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman – I’ve not really heard many good things about this book…

7. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte – I have tried this book so many times, maybe someday I’ll finally complete it.

8. Emma by Jane Austen – I have it on my kindle but haven’t even attempted this one.

9. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens – Another one I have tried numerous times but just can’t get through.

10. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo – I might just re-watch the musical…

Top Ten Resolutions

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke and The Bookish and now hosted by The Artsty Reader. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. It’s a great way to learn more about the bloggers you follow and to find lots of new books. This week’s topic is “Top Ten Bookish Resolutions / Goals”

I have already done a post on what my goals are for this year (which you can find here)

My Resolutions

  • To not buy any more physical books until at least June (with exception of continuations of series – looking at you Morgan Rhodes and Michael J Sullivan, and longing for Scott Lynch and Pat Rothfuss to surprise us all)
  • To only request Netgalley books that I really want so they don’t sit on my shelf for months/years.
  • To start using actual book marks rather than just everything and anything I can grab.
  • To stop shying away from classic books. I’m a big girl now. They shouldn’t scare me.
  • To try and interact with people more on here. I’m read all the comments that people leave on my blog but haven’t always replied or commented on other people’s. I’m going to make a more conscious effort to talk to all you wonderful people.
  • I try and be healthier – to eat out less, to cut down on eating biscuits/cake in the staff room, to eat more fruit, to drink more water. Not major things but hopefully the little things will make a positive impact.
  • To try and go out with my camera more.

What are your resolutions this year?

Top Ten Shortest vs Longest Books I’ve Read

35fed-toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. They’re currently on a break until mid-August so I’m choosing some past topics I missed out on in the meantime. I saw Maria @ Big City Bookworm do “ Top Ten Shortest vs Longest Books I’ve Read” a few weeks ago and I was really interested to see what mine were. So here we go…

The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2)Of Mice and Men

Wise Man’s Fear @ 994 pages vs Of Mice and Men @ 112 Pages

I’m not surprised that Wise Man’s Fear is the longest book I’ve read. Seeing it sitting on my shelf it stands out a mile. It definitely read a lot easier than some of the other books in this list and is one of my favourite books. I knew Of Mice and Men was short but because I studied this in school it felt a lot longer. I’ve read children’s books longer than that!

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)Animal Farm

Game of Thrones @ 835 pages vs Animal Farm @ 122 Pages

I’m really not surprised to see Game of Thrones as my second longest book because it read as being very long. Animal Farm is one of those books that you’re meant to read in high school but I never did – I really enjoyed it, it was really easy to read.

harry_potter_and_the_order_of_the_phoenixThe Stranger

Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix @ 776 pages vs The Stranger @ 123 pages

The book where the series starts getting serious but is fully with humour vs a serious book. Again another one I studied for IB so it felt longer than it actually was.

breaking_dawn_coverOne Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

Breaking Dawn @ 756 pages vs One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich @ 182 pages

A long book that I can’t remember what happens vs a short book in which nothing happens. I didn’t particularly enjoy either of these books.

Crime and PunishmentHeart of Darkness

Crime and Punishment @ 671 pages vs Heart of Darkness @ 188 pages

Both of these I had to do for the IB. I loved Crime and Punishment, I feel it is definitely a book that you get more enjoyment out of if you study it (like Shakespeare). On the other hand, I HATED Heart of Darkness. I just couldn’t get on with the writing style.

What are the longest and shortest books you’ve read?

My Top Ten Favourite TV Shows

They’re currently on a break until mid-August so I’m choosing some past topics I missed out on in the meantime. This week I’ve chosen “ Top Ten Favourite TV Shows”

In now particular order, TV shows I’ve been obsessed with are….

Hannibal

Image result for hannibal

Will Graham is recruited by Jack to help investigate serial killers with the FBI. With a lot of presure on him, Jack hires psychologist, and unknown cannibal,  Dr Hannibal Lecture to supervise Will.

I binge watched this in about 2 weeks. I recently re-watched the first episode with my friend and it reminded me just how much I loved it. The food is insane.

Game of Thrones

Season 7 baby! and winter is finally here.

Game of Thrones, simply is, people fighting to be sitting on the Iron Throne to be ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s a show in which no one is safe, there is sex, hotness, incest, death and sass. It’s amazing.

Dexter

Being orphaned at 3 when your mother is brutally murdered is going to have an affect on anyone. Turns out it affected Dexter in a way that only his adopted father, and policeman, Harry knows. Working with the police as a blood splatter analysis, Dexter is able to hunt down criminals who have escaped the police’s justice system and give them his own justice.

Is it weird to be supporting a serial killer? By the end of it I was totally rooting for him.

The Mentalist

The Mentalist 2008 Intertitle.png

After Red John murdered his family,  ex “Psychic” Patrick Jane works as a consultant for the CBI to read people and catch killers.

An amazing show, with people who are very easy on the eye.

Bones

Forensic anthropologist Dr Brennan and FBI Agent Booth collaborate to solve people’s deaths.

It’s also a lot funnier than it sounds…Image result for bones quotes

Grey’s Anatomy

They’re currently filming their 14th season and I’m proud to say I’ve seen very episode to date and I wish I could wipe my memory so I could re-watch it again not knowing anything.

It is set in a hospital and focuses on Meredith Grey and her fellow intern’s personal and professional lives. It’s a bit like a soap drama but I am so obsessed with it.

Broadchurch

Series titles over a coastal scene

A crime drama in which Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller investigate a murder of a young boy in a close-knit town in Dorset.

It stars a lot of Doctor Who actors including; David Tennant, the new doctor Jodie Whittaker and Arthur Darvill, as well as the amazing Olivia Colman. The whole show just keeps you on the edge of your seat and hooked the entire time.

Gossip Girl

The words "gossip girl" written in light yellow on a black background. The letters are lowercase and the letter "p" has an extended descender.

Basically just rich teens and their drama but my goodness it’s gripping!

House M.D.

House, the sarcy Doctor you go to when no other Doctor can solve your illness. Honestly, it’s probably not lupus…

Most recently… I’m slightly addicted to RuPaul’s Drag Race and Suits.

Top Ten Favorite Summer Activities That Aren’t Reading

35fed-toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new top ten list and invite everyone to share their answers. They’re currently on a break until mid-August so I’m choosing some past topics I missed out on in the meantime. As it’s my last week before summer, this week I’ve chosen “ Top Ten Favorite Summer Activities That Aren’t Reading”

Travelling

I love going new places, both in the UK and abroad. Here’s a link to my reviews of my travels abroad, including Paris, Barcelona and Rome.

BBQs

My family host a themed BBQ every year and this is one of the highlights of my summer – full of yummy food, cocktails and events. Last year we did a circus themed one where everyone did a circus act, the year before was a teddy bear’s picnic.

Drinking by the river

I love walking along the river and them sitting, watching the sunset and drinking cider. yum.

Ice cream

I particularly love gelato. Especially cherry gelato. yum!

Pimms

I sense a theme of food and drink… When ever I think of summer I think of sitting on the garden patio and drinking Pimms.

Sleeping In

I don’t get to do this normally so summer is a perfect time for me to catch up on sleep.

What activities do you enjoy doing during summer?
